What is Brainspotting?
Brainspotting(Watch Video Here) is a powerful, focused treatment method that works by identifying, processing and releasing core neurophysiological sources of emotional/body pain, trauma, dissociation and a variety of other challenging symptoms. Brainspotting (BSP) was actually developed out of EMDR by David Grand, PhD, in 2003.

Is Brainspotting Right for Me?
-
You feel a heavy weight, anxiety, or sadness in your body, but can't find the right words to describe it.
-
You are an athlete or performer struggling with sudden anxiety, stage fright, or a performance block.
-
You have survived a major life trauma (accident, abuse, grief) and find that talking about it just makes you feel worse.
-
You want a deep, gentle healing experience that doesn't require you to explain your whole story out loud.
1. Clients Who Felt "Stuck" or Overwhelmed by EMDR
Brainspotting is an incredible alternative for clients who tried EMDR but found it didn't quite work for them.
-
The Overwhelmed Client: EMDR can sometimes feel too intense or highly stimulating because it moves rapidly through memories. Brainspotting is much more gentle, allowing the client to deeply sit with an emotion at their own pace.
-
The Dissociative Client: For individuals who tend to disconnect or "float away" during rapid eye movements, Brainspotting's fixed gaze helps keep them grounded and anchored in the present moment.
2. Chronic Over-Thinkers and "Intellectualizers"
Some clients are brilliant at talk therapy because they can logically analyze their problems for 55 minutes without ever actually feeling them.
-
"I've talked about my childhood for ten years. I know exactly why I am the way I am, but my body still reacts like I'm a terrified kid." Brainspotting stops the talking and forces the brain to process the raw, unspoken emotion.
3.Chronic Pain and Illness
Brainspotting has a massive somatic (body) component. It directly targets the midbrain, which controls the autonomic nervous system and physical stress responses.
-
Somatic Symptoms: People whose stress immediately manifests as physical pain, jaw clenching, migraines, fibromyalgia, or chronic fatigue.
-
Medical Trauma: Individuals recovering from the emotional toll of a scary medical diagnosis, a difficult surgery, or chronic illness management.
4. High-Performers, Athletes, and Creatives
Because Brainspotting bypasses the conscious mind entirely to access the deepest parts of the brain, it is wildly popular for performance enhancement.
-
Creatives with Blocks: Writers, actors, musicians, and artists who hit a severe psychological wall or "creative freeze" and can't find their flow.
-
Athletes with "The Yips": Athletes suffering from sports performance anxiety, sports-related trauma (like a major injury or a devastating loss), or sudden, inexplicable loss of motor skills (the yips).
Common FAQ's About Brainspotting
What exactly is a 'Brainspot'?
A Brainspot is an eye position that correlates directly with an emotional or physical trauma hidden deep within your brain's subconscious. When you focus your eyes on this specific spot, it acts like a doorway, allowing you to access and process deeply rooted stress, memories, and physical tension that talk therapy can't quite reach.
How is Brainspotting different from EMDR?
While both are incredible brain-body therapies born from the same roots, they feel very different. EMDR is highly structured and uses rapid, continuous side-to-side eye movements. Brainspotting is much more fluid and gentle, focusing on a single, still eye position. Many clients who find EMDR too fast-paced or overwhelming prefer the steady, deeply grounding nature of Brainspotting.
What does a typical session look like?
Together, we will identify an issue, worry, or physical sensation you want to work on. As you tune into that feeling, I will guide you to move your eyes across your visual field—often using a specialized telescopic pointer—to find the exact eye position that heightens or anchors that feeling. Once we find your "Brainspot," you will simply hold your gaze there while your brain and body naturally process the emotion. You may notice shifts of feelings in your body, images or memories, or a combination. You are encouraged to talk as much or as little as you would like during the session.
Do I have to talk a lot or explain my past?
No, and that is the beauty of it. You do not need to retell your story or analyze your past out loud for Brainspotting to work. In fact, many sessions are done in relative silence. You only need to share as much as feels comfortable; your brain processes the information internally whether you speak it or not.
Does Brainspotting work online via telehealth?
Yes, it is incredibly effective virtually. Instead of a physical pointer, we use your home environment (like a specific spot on your window frame, a sticky note on your wall, or digital on-screen markers) to lock in your eye position.
What will I feel like after a session?
Because Brainspotting works with the deep survival brain and central nervous system, it can be physically tiring. You might leave the session feeling mentally fatigued, light, or emotionally raw. Your brain will continue processing the work in the background for a couple of days, so we always recommend giving yourself some quiet downtime after a session.
